Step 1 - Measure their chest
Chest Measuring Tips:
-
Leave Elbow Clearance
When measuring the chest strap position, leave enough room behind the elbows.
If your dog extends their front leg backwards while walking or running, the harness should not rub or touch the elbow area.
-
Too close. This leaves no elbow clearance.
This is especially important for:
- active dogs
- sensitive dogs
- dogs with short coats
- dogs prone to rubbing
- active dogs
Step 2 - Measure their neck
Neck Measuring Tips:
-
Start at the Base of the Neck
The neck strap should sit at the base of the neck — not high up near the throat like a collar.
A lower position helps allow more natural movement and a more comfortable fit.

Step 3 - Measure their body length
Body Length Tips:
-
Start at the Sternum
For body length, start measuring from the sternum (the bony area at the front of the chest).
From there, measure underneath the body toward the elbow clearance point.
-
This helps create a fit that supports movement without sitting too close to sensitive areas.
Trainer Tips:
-
Use a Lick Mat for Wiggly Dogs
If your dog thinks standing still is a personal attack, try using a lick mat while measuring.
-
Snacks are King
A few snacks can turn harness sizing into a fun game
-
No Tape Measure? No Problem.
If you don’t have a flexible tape measure, use:
- a lead
- string
- ribbon
- or literally anything vaguely bendy
Then lay it flat beside a ruler or standard tape measure to check the length.
- a lead
Frequently Asked Questions
My dog is between sizes. Which should I choose?
Not all dogs carry their measurements the same way.
For example:
- a long, slim dog may suit a different size than a compact broad dog with the same chest measurement.
That’s why body length is such an important part of choosing the best fit.
Which measurement matters most?
Chest measurement is the main starting point.
But:
- body length helps determine overall fit and strap positioning
- neck measurement helps fine tune adjustment range
All three measurements work together for the best fit.
Why do the size ranges overlap?
Because dogs aren’t built in perfect little categories.
The overlapping sizes allow flexibility for:
- broad chests
- slim builds
- fluffy coats
- growing puppies
- long-bodied dogs
- awkwardly proportioned little legends
A harness should fit the dog — not force the dog to fit the chart.
What if my dog still seems hard to fit?
Some dogs are just beautifully confusing.
If you’re stuck between sizes, send us your measurements and a photo and we’ll help guide you toward the best option.
